My ex-wife treated me well until the marriage, and very quickly and
very dramatically changed. The abuse started after the marriage.
She was limited by the amount of committment I had. Before the
marriage, I would have simply left if she had beat me and she knew
it. She couldn't conceive of me divorcing her (she was wrong -
which is why she lied about birth control to get pregnant, to up the
committment).

However - having said this - there were plenty of signs that I
should have keyed in on. The biggest was the way she treated
others. She was regularily abusive to service people (like
waiters). She also treated her friends terribly. Her family was a
total mess - and they all treated each other badly.
