Traffic Rank according to Alexa.com
Traffic rankings according to alexa.com depend on
statistics gathered from self-selected samples, that is, those internet
users who installed the alexa.com toolbar in their browsers.
Self-selected samples do not provide acceptable data quality and are
never used in rigidly controlled studies that meet scientific standards.
Alexa.com doesn't meet those standards and knows it. Even so,
alexa.com claims that the rankings it establishes for websites that rank
in 100,000th place or higher are accurate, while the rankings for
websites ranked less than 100,000th place are subject to sampling
errors. To some extent that claim may be close to the truth, but
there is now a far more serious problem with the traffic rankings
established by alexa.com.
According to uptime.pingdom.com, since October 2006
alexa.com has been experiencing availability problems that increased
considerably in severity by about the middle of November 2006.
Uptime.pingdom.com identifies that
alexa.com has been fully available only on 2006 11 01, 04, 10, and 14
during the interval from November 1st to 28th. On Nov. 20th and
24th the availability of alexa.com was as low as 72% and 82%
respectively.
In addition to experiencing availability problems,
alexa.com is also plagued by timeliness issues. The graph by alexa.com
that is shown at the beginning of this commentary is supposed to be
updated on a daily basis, but it had not been updated once in the
interval from Nov. 22 - 27. It finally got updated on Nov. 28, but
only to reflect what that ranking was on Nov. 23. At the time of
writing this commentary it is 2006 11 29 8:00 MST and the
alexa.com graph is still stuck on Nov. 23.
During the interval from Nov. 14 to 16 the daily number
of visitors to Fathers for Life almost tripled. It tapered off a
little since then but still remains being considerably higher than it
was on Nov. 14.
Alexa.com should have reflected that through changes in its ranking
for Fathers for Life and should correspondingly have reflected those
rankings in the graph shown above. It did so only very
imperfectly. The following graph shows traffic data from the host
server for F4L.

The following graphs were obtained November 29th from
alexa.com:

Alexa.com appears to have experienced a serious
derailment. Perhaps alexa.com will get back on track, but until
that happens I will examine other options for tracking ranking trends
for F4L.
Update 2006 12 02: As of Nov. 25 alexa.com
managed to bring its availability back to normal, into the order of
99.71% or better. A few days ago it also caught up with the
backlog of data processing, although today, Dec 02, its processing lags
again by two days.

Anorexics Flap over Flappers
Mailing lists
Fathers for Life operates a mailing list (not a discussion forum), to which are being mailed
out comments, statistics and various articles or notifications pertaining to issues such as those covered in the pages identified in the table shown
above. The number of messages posted to that list ranges from none over a period of a few days to seldom more than three per day. It depends
on what issues are hot topics.
In addition, Fathers for Life operates a mailing list for journalists. That list seldom receives more traffic than one message per day, with many
days going by without any messages being mailed out to that list.
If you wish to be subscribed to one or the other of the lists, to Fathers for Life and identify in the subject header of the message:
"Subscribe to Fathers for Life, general", or
"Subscribe to Fathers for Life, journalism".
However, before you can be subscribed, you'll need to identify a couple of references to people you know and that know you that are involved in
pro-father or pro-family activism. In addition, you should identify examples of advocacy work that you do on behalf of fathers, children or families.
Perhaps it will seem discriminatory to some not to mention mothers in the preceding paragraph. They are not mentioned (other than within the
contents of the website) because fathers need all the help they can get. Fathers for Life will begin to focus on the plight of mothers as soon as
women are more likely to die than men. In the meantime we must worry about the fact that in the whole world, due to anti-male and sexist attitudes, men die on average 5.1 years
sooner than women do, and that whether it is due to death, divorce or separation children are far more likely to be deprived of their fathers
than of their mothers.
